
Abbigail Makin
Abbigail Makin (she/her) originally from Shepparton, is an Italian/North-western European, current proud graduate from The Victorian College of the Arts who studied a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Dance).
Abbigail’s training began in 2010 at Goulburn Valley Academy of Ballet, in jazz techniques. Amy Newton Dance Studios (ANDS) is where she transferred in 2012 to do styles such as hip hop, commercial, jazz, ballet, tap, lyrical, contemporary and acro. She was awarded a scholarship throughout her time there. Alongside this, Abbigail competed in many dance competitions both in regional areas and metropolitan, winning most outstanding dancer on multiple occasions.
While doing this her involvement with ‘Awaken’, trained her further in contemporary and choreography, where she was the first assistant choreographer. She also completed VCE Dance and Theatre Studies at high school. In 2017, for World Ballet Day, she had the opportunity to sit in on company class at The Australian Ballet and speak on behalf of the opportunities she had at her high school (Wanganui Park Secondary College) with the Australian Ballet Education Team in front of millions of people online.
In 2019 Abbigail landed the role of the leading lady ‘Patrice’ in 13 the Musical (Shepparton Alliance Schools). Abbigail was the choreographer of this show, offering her with a Georgy Award (Judges award of excellence in choreography). She has done many musicals Grease being one of them playing the role of ‘Cha Cha’.
In 2022 she was grateful to second with The Australian Ballet Education and Outreach Team. She spent ten days with the team which was led by Jasmin Dwyer. She has completed several accounts of character work with Showtime Attractions including a Santa Bear and Easy Bunny Suit. Also in 2022 she received a spot in the Herald Sun’s Victoria’s top 40 best young dancers, where she was highly nominated by Amy Newton Christie, ANDS studio owner. In 2023 Abbigail received an auditioned place in the Joffrey Ballet School’s Contemporary and Jazz Summer Intensives through the Victorian Dance Festival (VDF). She also worked as ‘Santa’s Helper’ (an elf) at Myer’s Santaland. In 2024 Abbigail received a spot in Chunky Move’s ‘Choreo Lab’ Dance Intensive which she will be gratefully partaking in.
Abbigail has participated in many workshops and intensives. At the VCA, she has been mentored by teachers such as Rachel Coulson, Siobhan McKenna, Georgia Rudd, Antony Hamilton, Stephanie Lake, Julie Minaai, Kialea- Nadine Williams, Kimball Wong, Kalman Warhaft, Kyall Shanks, Joel Bray and Brianna Kell. Abbigail has gratefully worked with choreographers such as Siobhan Mckenna, James Batchelor, Alleyne Dance (UK) and Nicole Corea (US).
Abbigail has an extreme and genuine love for dance and is very grateful for her wonderful family and friends for their ongoing support.
